How to use the salary calculator

  1. Enter your pay and choose how often it's quoted: per hour, day, week, fortnight, half month, month, quarter or year.
  2. Set your hours and days a week. They turn an hourly or daily rate into a yearly figure, and back.
  3. If your holidays or vacation days are unpaid, enter them to see what you really earn over the year.
  4. Under the table, choose the country you're taxed in (US, UK, Canada, India or Australia) to see your take-home pay.

Formulas

  • Annual salary = hourly rate × hours a week × 52, or daily rate × days a week × 52.
  • Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (52 × hours a week). Daily rate = annual salary ÷ (52 × days a week).
  • Weekly = annual ÷ 52; fortnightly (bi-weekly) = ÷ 26; semi-monthly = ÷ 24; monthly = ÷ 12; quarterly = ÷ 4.
  • With unpaid days off: annual × (working days − days off) ÷ working days, where working days = 52 × days a week.

Worked example: $25 an hour

At 40 hours over 5 days a week, $25 an hour is $52,000 a year: $4,333.33 a month, $2,000.00 a fortnight, $1,000.00 a week and $200.00 a day. If 10 public holidays and 15 vacation days are unpaid, you're paid for 235 of 260 working days, so you earn $47,000 a year, the same as a salaried job paying $22.60 an hour with paid leave. Turned the other way, a salaried job paying $52,000 with those 25 days of paid leave pays $27.66 for each hour you actually work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work in a week, then by 52 weeks. At 40 hours a week, $25 an hour is $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 a year, or $4,333.33 a month.

How do I work out my hourly rate from my salary?

Divide the yearly salary by 52 and then by your weekly hours. $60,000 a year at 40 hours a week is $60,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $28.85 an hour.

How many working hours are there in a year?

52 weeks times your weekly hours: 2,080 hours at 40 hours a week, 1,976 at 38 hours (common in Australia) and 1,950 at 37.5 hours (common in the UK). Paid holidays don't change this; unpaid days off reduce the hours you're paid for.

Is bi-weekly the same as semi-monthly pay?

No. Bi-weekly (fortnightly) means every two weeks, 26 pays a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, 24 pays a year, so each semi-monthly pay is a little bigger: on $60,000 a year, $2,500.00 instead of $2,307.69.

What does the column with unpaid days off show?

If you aren't paid for public holidays or vacation days, as in many hourly and contract jobs, you earn less over the year than your rate suggests. That column spreads what you really earn over the whole year, so you can compare it with a salaried job that pays leave.

Does the take-home estimate include every tax?

It includes income tax and the main payroll taxes for one job: federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare in the US; Income Tax and National Insurance in the UK; federal and provincial tax, CPP and EI in Canada; income tax and cess in India; income tax and the Medicare levy in Australia. Pensions, retirement plans, student loans and other deductions are in each country's full tax calculator.
