Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 18% of 2,500 = 2,500 × 18 ÷ 100 = 450.

How do I find what percent one number is of another?

Divide the part by the total and multiply by 100. For example, 450 out of 600 = 450 ÷ 600 × 100 = 75%. This is how exam marks percentages are calculated.

How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. For example, a salary going from ₹40,000 to ₹46,000 is a (46,000 − 40,000) ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 15% increase.

Is a 10% rise followed by a 10% fall back to the start?

No. 100 → 110 (up 10%) → 99 (down 10% of 110). Percentage changes are relative to the value at the time, so they do not cancel out.
