How to use the tax calculator

  1. Check the country: it follows your device's region, and you can pick the US, UK, Canada, India or Australia.
  2. Enter your salary before tax, per year or per month.
  3. Add the one or two details that change tax most there: filing status and state in the US, Scotland in the UK, your province in Canada, the regime in India, or the income year in Australia.
  4. Read your take-home pay per month and per year, and each tax line. For pensions, student loans and other deductions, open the full calculator linked under the result.

These aren't comparable as amounts, because the salaries are in different currencies and typical pay differs, but the average rate shows how much each system takes from a middle income.

What's taken from your pay in each country

Frequently asked questions

Which countries does this tax calculator cover?

The United States (federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and state income tax for all 50 states and DC), the United Kingdom (Income Tax and National Insurance, including Scottish rates), Canada (federal and provincial tax, CPP or QPP and EI), India (income tax in the new or old regime with cess) and Australia (income tax, the low income tax offset and the Medicare levy). Each has a full calculator with more options.

Which tax year does it use?

The current one for each country: 2026 in the US and Canada, 2026/27 in the UK (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027), FY 2026-27 in India (1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027) and 2026–27 in Australia (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027), with 2025–26 also available for Australia.

What's the difference between my average and marginal tax rate?

Your average rate is all the tax you pay divided by your salary. Your marginal rate is the tax on the next $100 or £100 you earn, which is what a raise or overtime is taxed at. On £35,000 in England the average rate is 17.9% but the marginal rate is 28% (20% Income Tax plus 8% National Insurance).

Why is my take-home pay different from my payslip?

Payroll works out tax for each pay period with its own rounding and tax code or withholding tables, and your payslip may also take off pension, retirement plan, health insurance or student loan payments. This calculator works out the tax for a whole year on salary alone, so expect small differences. The full calculator for your country adds most of those deductions.

Is my salary sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded or stored. The country is preselected from your device's time zone or language, and you can change it.
