  • Electricity duty is charged on top of the tariff; we couldn't confirm its rate on an official page, so it isn't added.
  • The rate schedule lists a rate for each consumption range; this calculator charges each range at its own rate.
  • NPCL (Greater Noida) has its own tariff order and isn't covered here.

LMV-1 Domestic Light, Fan & Power under the UPERC tariff order of 2 July 2026 (Petitions 2314-2318 of 2025); FY 2026-27, in force 7 days after UPPCL's public notice of July 2026. Sources, checked 11 October 2026:

An estimate from the published tariff, not your bill. Your discom's bill can add meter rent, arrears, rebates, a fuel surcharge and duty or tax that isn't included here.

How to use the electricity bill calculator

  1. Choose your state and connection type (urban, rural, lifeline or BPL where the state has them).
  2. Enter the units (kWh) for the billing period and, where the fixed charge depends on it, your sanctioned load from the bill.
  3. Read the bill slab by slab. Add the month's fuel surcharge if your discom has announced one.

How the bill is worked out

Bill = energy charge (each slab's units × its rate) + fixed charge + fuel surcharge + electricity duty or tax − rebates and subsidies. Maharashtra also charges a wheeling charge of ₹1.60 a unit, and its 16% duty is worked out on the fixed, energy, wheeling and fuel charges together. Karnataka adds 9% electricity tax on the charges. Tamil Nadu bills every two months and West Bengal every quarter, so their slabs are for those periods; the calculator scales them when your bill is monthly.

Karnataka (BESCOM)₹5.80 on every unit₹150 per kW a month

Worked example

200 units in a month on Uttar Pradesh's urban tariff with a 2 kW connection: 100 × ₹5.50 + 50 × ₹5.50 + 50 × ₹6.00 = ₹1,125 energy charge, plus 2 × ₹110 = ₹220 fixed charge, so ₹1,345.00 before the month's FPPAS and duty.

250 units in a month from MSEDCL in Maharashtra, single phase: 100 × ₹3.96 + 150 × ₹10.80 = ₹2,016, wheeling 250 × ₹1.60 = ₹400, fixed ₹130, which makes ₹2,546; electricity duty at 16% is ₹407.36, so the bill is ₹2,953.36, about ₹11.81 a unit.

200 units in a month in Bihar on a 2 kW urban (DS-II) post-paid connection: 200 × ₹7.42 = ₹1,484 energy charge plus 2 × ₹80 = ₹160 fixed charge, less the state's 125 free units (125 × ₹7.42 = ₹927.50), so ₹716.50 before electricity duty and the state's continuing subsidy on the other 75 units. At 125 units or fewer the bill is ₹0.

What isn't included

  • The monthly fuel surcharge, unless you enter it: it changes every month and can be negative.
  • Electricity duty or tax in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu: we couldn't confirm a current rate on an official page, so none is added.
  • Electricity duty in Madhya Pradesh: MP Central Discom's tariff page lists 9% of the tariff up to 100 units a month and 12% above; the state's 2012 duty law as first published had 9%, 12% (101-200 units) and 15% (above 200), and its later amendments couldn't be checked. Neither says whether the fixed charge counts or whether the higher rate applies to every unit, so it isn't added.
  • Meter rent, arrears, late-payment interest, and rebates for paying early, online or with a prepaid meter (except Bihar's and MP's prepaid rebates).
  • Subsidies a state pays outside the tariff, such as West Bengal's for homes using up to 300 units a month, Karnataka's Gruha Jyothi free units and Bihar's per-unit subsidy on units above 125. Bihar's first 125 free units and Tamil Nadu's free units are included.

States not included yet

  • Rajasthan: RERC's FY 2026-27 order (30 March 2026, Petitions 2378-2380/2025) couldn't be opened from the commission's website, and the discoms' tariff booklet wasn't reachable, so its rates aren't confirmed here yet.
  • Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and other states and union territories haven't been checked yet.

Frequently asked questions

How is a home electricity bill worked out in India?

Your units are split into the slabs in your state's tariff order and each part is charged at its slab's rate. A fixed charge is added (per kW of load, per connection, or by consumption band, depending on the state), then any fuel surcharge for the month and the state's electricity duty or tax. Some states also deduct a government subsidy.

What does slab-wise or telescopic billing mean?

Only the units inside a slab pay that slab's rate. With 200 units on Uttar Pradesh's urban tariff, the first 150 units are charged ₹5.50 and only the last 50 are charged ₹6.00, so crossing a slab doesn't raise the rate on every unit. Tamil Nadu is the exception to watch: its slab rates depend on your total for the two months, so going from 500 to 501 units removes 100 free units.

Why is my real bill different from this estimate?

Bills can add a monthly fuel and power purchase surcharge (FPPAS, FAC or MVCA), meter rent, arrears and interest, and electricity duty in states where we couldn't confirm the rate; they can also subtract rebates for paying on time or online. Enter your month's fuel surcharge to get closer, and check the duty line on your bill.

Which states does the calculator cover?

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra (MSEDCL), Bihar, West Bengal (WBSEDCL), Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat (the four state discoms) and Karnataka (BESCOM): the states whose current domestic tariff we could read in the regulator's order or the discom's official schedule. Rajasthan isn't included yet because its FY 2026-27 order couldn't be opened from the commission's site.

How many units are free in Tamil Nadu and Bihar?

Tamil Nadu: from 10 May 2026, homes using up to 500 units in two months pay nothing for the first 200; above 500 units only the first 100 are free (TNERC Orders 4 and 5 of 2026). Bihar: from July 2025 the first 125 units a month are free for every domestic consumer, so a home using up to 125 units pays nothing at all. Above 125 units only the extra units and the fixed charge are billed: 200 units on a 2 kW urban connection is 75 × ₹7.42 + ₹160 = ₹716.50. The state says its earlier per-unit subsidy on those extra units continues; this calculator doesn't deduct it because the amount isn't published officially.
