How to type in Hindi online

  1. Click in the box and type a Hindi word in English letters, for example dhanyavad.
  2. Press Space (or a comma, a full stop, or Enter for a new line). The word becomes the Hindi spelling at the front of the bar: धन्यवाद.
  3. Want a different spelling? While typing, tap it in the bar (or press ↓ until it is picked, then Space). For a word already typed, put the cursor on it and tap the spelling you want.
  4. Need a letter the suggestions don't give? Open the Hindi keyboard and tap it in.
  5. Press Copy and paste the Hindi into WhatsApp, Word or a form, or Download .txt to keep a file.

Example

You type: mera naam Ravi hai aur main Delhi mein rehta hoon

You get: मेरा नाम रवि है और मैं दिल्ली में रहता हूं

Each word changes when you press Space. Everyday words come from the word list, so they get the spelling Hindi writers use even when the English letters leave details out: main gives मैं and mein gives में. Delhi is typed the English way and still gives दिल्ली, because English words people write in Hindi sentences have their usual Hindi spelling. When a word has more than one reading the bar offers them: bharat gives भारत, भरत, बारात, with the most common first.

Tips for typing Hindi faster

  • Type long vowels doubled when a word comes out wrong: aa for आ, ee for ई, oo for ऊ.
  • A final a or i is read as the long vowel, the way people type: kya gives क्या and pani gives पानी.
  • Writing a mix of Hindi and English? Press Ctrl+G (or the English button) for English words, or Esc to keep one word as it is. Emails and web addresses such as [email protected], palz.co.in and https://… stay as you type them, even with Hindi digits on; for an address with a hyphen in it, switch to English first.
  • Abbreviations typed in capitals are spelt letter by letter, the way Hindi newspapers write them: PM gives पीएम, BJP gives बीजेपी and SMS gives एसएमएस.
  • Pasted a paragraph of Hinglish? Convert English words turns every English-letter word in the box into Hindi at once, and Ctrl+Z undoes it.
  • Tick Hindi digits for १२३ instead of 123, and untick Full stop as । if you want a plain full stop.

How the suggestions work

The tool keeps a list of the 30,000 most common Hindi words, counted in about 960 MB of Hindi news text from IndicCorp v2, a public domain (CC0) corpus by AI4Bharat at IIT Madras. For the letters you type it finds the words that could be spelt that way, ignoring the details people skip (short and long vowels, aspirated letters like kh and k, the nasal dot), and ranks them by how close the spelling is and how common the word is. Words that aren't in the list, like most names, are spelt letter by letter with the chart above. The list downloads once with the page and everything runs on your device, which is why it works offline and why your text stays private. Words typed before it has loaded (a second or two, longer on a slow phone) are spelt by the chart, then re-spelt from the list when it arrives.

For more on the text you write, the word counter counts Hindi words and characters and the online notepad keeps longer drafts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type in Hindi with an English keyboard?

Type each word the way it sounds in English letters and press Space: namaste becomes नमस्ते and mera bharat mahan becomes मेरा भारत महान. The bar above the box shows other spellings of the word you are typing; tap one, or pick it with the up and down arrows and press Space or Enter. Press Esc (or tap the English word at the end of the bar) to keep a word in English, and Ctrl+G to switch the whole box between Hindi and English.

Is the text Unicode? Will it work in WhatsApp, Word or with the Mangal font?

Yes. The tool writes standard Unicode Devanagari, the same as a phone's Hindi keyboard, so you can paste it into WhatsApp, Gmail, Word, Google Docs, websites and online forms. Unicode fonts such as Mangal, Nirmala UI and Noto Sans Devanagari show it. It is not Kruti Dev: Kruti Dev is an older font that stores Hindi as English letters, so a test or form that asks for Kruti Dev needs that font's own keyboard or a font converter.

How do I type half letters and letters like ज्ञ, क्ष, ऋ and ड़?

Type two consonants together for a half letter: namaste gives स्त in नमस्ते and pyar gives प्यार. For ज्ञ type gy (gyan gives ज्ञान), for क्ष type ksh (shiksha gives शिक्षा and akshit gives अक्षित), and for ड़ type d or r (ladki and larki both give लड़की). A lone x is the ks of English words (taxi gives टैक्सी), though words like laxmi still give लक्ष्मी. In the scheme, RRi is ऋ, capital T, D, N and Sh inside a word are ट, ड, ण and ष, and capital M is the nasal dot ं. The Hindi keyboard under the box has every letter and sign, with the English letters for each.

Why did a word come out wrong, and how do I fix it?

Words are matched against the 30,000 most common words in Hindi news text; names and rare words are spelt by rules, which can't always tell a short vowel from a long one. Pick another spelling in the bar, or put the cursor back on a Hindi word (or press Backspace after it) to see its other spellings. Typing aa, ee and oo for the long vowels helps the rules, and Ctrl+Z straight after a word turns it back into the English letters you typed.

Does it work offline, and is my text saved?

Everything happens in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Once the page and its word list have loaded, typing keeps working without a connection. Your text is kept in this browser on this device until you clear it; private windows and clearing browsing data remove it, so copy or download anything you want to keep.

Is this an English to Hindi translator?

No. It writes the words you type in Hindi letters (transliteration): type aap kaise hain and you get आप कैसे हैं. If you type an English sentence, you get the same English words in Hindi letters, not a Hindi translation.
