How to make a travel itinerary

  1. Enter the trip name, who's travelling, where you're going and the start date. Pick the number of days (up to 30) or the end date, and your currency.
  2. For each day, add the city and your plans: time, activity, place or address, booking reference, cost and notes. Use Up and Down to change the order.
  3. Add flights, trains or other transport, and where you're staying with check-in and check-out dates and confirmation numbers.
  4. Edit the packing checklist, fill in emergency contacts, then download the PDF, print it, or save the plan as a .json file.

What to include in a travel itinerary

  • Dates and places for every day, so you and the people at home know where you'll be.
  • Times of fixed plans: flights, trains, tours, tickets with an entry time, and hotel check-in and check-out.
  • Booking references and addresses, so you can find a booking quickly and show an address to a driver or type it into a map.
  • Costs, to see what each day adds up to and keep the trip within budget.
  • Emergency contacts: the local emergency number, your embassy or consulate, your travel insurer's helpline and policy number, and someone at home.

Worked example

The example trip is 3 days in a made-up city for 2 adults. Day 1 has a train from the airport (12), lunch (30), a walking tour (40) and dinner (60), which comes to 142. Day 2 comes to 151 and day 3 to 80, so activities total 373. Add return flights (240) and two nights in a hotel (380), and the trip total is 993, or 331 a day. Change any cost and the day totals, trip total and average per day update straight away.

To see costs in your home currency, use the currency converter. For calls home across time zones, try the time zone converter.

Tips for a useful itinerary

  • Keep a copy offline. Save the PDF on your phone and carry a printed copy, in case your battery runs out or there's no signal.
  • Share it with someone at home, so they know where you're staying and how to reach you.
  • Enter times as your bookings show them. Tickets normally give local time at each end, so a flight across time zones can seem to land before it takes off.
  • Leave gaps between fixed plans for delays and for getting from one place to the next.
  • Check before you book: your government's travel advice and the entry rules for your destination.

Frequently asked questions

Is this itinerary maker free?

Yes. There's no sign-up and no limit, and nothing is uploaded: the plan, the PDF and the print view are all made in your browser. The tool is paid for by ads on this page.

How do I save my itinerary and edit it later?

It's saved automatically in this browser as you type. To keep a copy or move it to another device, click "Save plan (.json)", then open that file here with "Open saved plan" whenever you want to change it. Clearing your browser data deletes the automatic copy, so keep the file.

How do I share my itinerary with family or friends?

Download the PDF and send it by email or a messaging app, or print it. If they'll edit the plan too, send them the .json file; they can open it on this page.

What paper size does the PDF use?

A4, or US Letter if your browser is set to the US or Canada. You can change it under "Paper size" before you download or print.

Can I write my itinerary in another language?

Yes, on screen and when you print, because printing uses your device's fonts. The PDF uses a standard font that covers English and Western European letters, so other scripts, such as Chinese, Arabic or Hindi, show as "?" in the PDF. For those, use Print and choose "Save as PDF".
