How to make a meme
- Choose your picture.
- Type the top and bottom text (up to 80 characters each). Leave one blank if you only need one line.
- Check the preview and download the JPG.
The classic meme style
Text is set in capitals in Impact, the traditional meme font, or a heavy bold font where Impact isn't installed, white with a thick black outline so it stays readable on any picture. The size starts large and shrinks automatically until each line fits within the image width, so long captions still fit on one line.
Size and quality
The meme is saved as a JPG up to 1200 pixels wide: large pictures are scaled down to that width, which is plenty for WhatsApp, Instagram and X. There's no watermark and nothing is uploaded.
Tips for good memes
- Short text works best: a setup on top and the punchline at the bottom.
- Pictures with plain areas at the top and bottom keep faces clear of the text.
- Use your own photos or images you have the right to use, and don't use memes to mock or harass real people.
