Statutory holiday in the UK for employees and workers. Not legal advice.

How to use the holiday calculator

  1. Choose how you work and enter your days, hours or shifts a week, or the hours worked in a pay period if they vary.
  2. Choose a full leave year, or starting or leaving part way through it, and enter the dates.
  3. Read your statutory holiday; when leaving, add the holiday you've taken and a day's pay to see what you're owed.

Worked example

On 3 days a week the statutory minimum is 5.6 × 3 = 16.8 days. Someone on 5 days a week who starts on 14 September with a January leave year has September to December left, 4 months: 28 × 4 ÷ 12 = 9.33, which rounds up to 9.5 days. Leaving on 30 June instead, they've earned 181 of 365 days' worth: 28 × 181 ÷ 365 = 13.88 days, less any holiday already taken.

The rules

  • 5.6 weeks a year, capped at 28 days; bank holidays can be included
  • Starting part way: one-twelfth a month, fractions up to a half or whole day
  • Leaving: the share of the leave year worked; untaken holiday is paid
  • Irregular hours and part-year workers: 12.07% of hours worked

Frequently asked questions

How much holiday am I entitled to?

5.6 weeks a year. Working 5 days a week that's 28 days; part-time it's 5.6 times your days a week, so 3 days a week gives 16.8 days. It's capped at 28 days, so working 6 days a week doesn't add more. If you're paid by the hour, it's 5.6 times your weekly hours: 210 hours on 37.5 hours a week.

Are bank holidays included?

They can be. There's no legal right to paid bank holidays on top of the 5.6 weeks, so an employer can count them in it. England and Wales have 8 bank holidays a year, Scotland 9 and Northern Ireland 10; your contract says whether they're extra.

How much holiday do I get if I start part way through the year?

One-twelfth of the year's holiday for each month left in the leave year, counting the month you start. A fraction of a day becomes a half day if it's under a half and a whole day if it's over. Starting on 23 September with an April leave year on 5 days a week: 7 months × 28 ÷ 12 = 16.33, so 16.5 days.

What happens to my holiday when I leave?

You build up holiday for the part of the leave year you've worked. Holiday you've earned but not taken is paid in your final pay; if you've taken more than you've earned, your employer can only take it back from your pay if your contract allows it.

How is holiday worked out for irregular hours?

For irregular-hours and part-year workers in leave years starting on or after 1 April 2024, holiday builds up at 12.07% of the hours worked in each pay period, rounded to the nearest hour. 30 hours worked earns 3.621 hours, which rounds to 4. The 12.07% comes from 5.6 weeks of holiday over the other 46.4 weeks of the year.

Can I carry holiday over to next year?

Up to 1.6 weeks can be carried over if your employer agrees. The other 4 weeks can only be carried over if you couldn't take them, for example because you were off sick, on family leave, or your employer didn't let you.
