Thumbnail requirements

Resolution: at least 1280×720 pixels (minimum width 640 pixels).
Aspect ratio: 16:9.
Formats: JPG, PNG or GIF (non-animated).
File size: 2 MB has long been the limit; YouTube has been raising this on desktop, but keep files small to be safe.

Most viewers first see thumbnails small on a phone. Use three to five large words at most, high contrast, and one clear subject.
