How to play
- Type any five-letter word with the on-screen or your own keyboard, and press Enter.
- Read the tiles: ✓ teal means right letter, right place; ↔ amber means the letter is in the word but in another place; grey means it isn't in the word.
- Use the clues for your next guess. The keyboard keeps the colours, so you can see which letters are used up.
- Find the word within six guesses to win, then share your result grid. It shows coloured circles only, never letters, so it won't spoil the word for anyone.
Worked example
These rows are scored by the same code as the game. Say the hidden word is TRACE and you guess CRANE:
C↔R✓A✓NE✓
R, A and E are in the right places. C is in the word but not first, and N isn't in it. A good next guess keeps R, A and E where they are, moves C, and tries a new first letter: TRACE gets all five.
Repeated letters are counted fairly. If the hidden word is ROBOT and you guess FLOOR:
FLO↔O✓R↔
The O in fourth place is right, the other O is in the word too (ROBOT has two), and R is in the word but not last.
Tips
- Open with a word that has common letters and two or three vowels, such as SLATE, CRANE or AUDIO.
- On your second guess, try five new letters if the first told you little. Spending a guess to rule out letters often pays off.
- Remember letters can repeat. If you're stuck with one gap left, think of words with a double letter.
- Keep track of where an ↔ letter can't go: it wasn't in that place in any guess where it showed ↔.
About the word list
The 1,984 possible answers and the accepted guesses come from SCOWL (Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists) by Kevin Atkinson, which is built from public-domain word lists and may be used freely with its notice. We removed plurals, rare forms and offensive words from the answers. See the word list licence. This game isn't connected to any other word game.
