Daily Jigsaw Puzzle

Put the picture back together: drag each piece to its place on the board and it snaps in. A new picture every day, from 12 to 96 pieces, or a puzzle from your own photo.

Drawing today's picture…

How to play

  1. Pick how many pieces you want. The loose pieces start in the tray under the board.
  2. Drag a piece onto the board. When it's close to its place it snaps in and can't be moved again.
  3. Use Edges first to bring all the straight-edged pieces to the front of the tray, and the faint guide picture on the board to see where things go.
  4. Place every piece to finish. Your time is saved, and the daily puzzle gives a result to share.

Sizes

  • 12 pieces: 4 across × 3 down.
  • 24 pieces: 6 across × 4 down.
  • 48 pieces: 8 across × 6 down.
  • 96 pieces: 12 across × 8 down.

On a phone, 12 or 24 pieces are the most comfortable; 48 and 96 are best on a tablet or computer. Picture styles: mountain lake, hot-air balloons, stained glass, city at night, patchwork quilt.

Worked example: the order that works

With 24 pieces (6 × 4) there are 16 edge pieces and 8 middle pieces. Press Edges first and place the four corners, then the straight edges, which gives you the frame. That leaves just the 8 middle pieces, and each one now has neighbours to match its colours against.

Tips

  • Corners have two straight sides, edges have one. Find them first.
  • Group pieces by colour in the tray: sky, water, buildings, and so on.
  • Look at the shape too: a piece can only go where its tabs and holes match its neighbours.
  • Switch off the guide picture for a harder game.

More relaxed puzzles: word search and memory match.

Frequently asked questions

Is the daily jigsaw the same for everyone?

Yes. Everyone gets the same picture and the same cut on the same date, so you can compare times for the same number of pieces. A new puzzle arrives at midnight where you are.

Where do the pictures come from?

They're drawn by code on this page from the date, in five styles: mountain lakes, hot-air balloons, stained glass, city lights and patchwork quilts. No photos are downloaded, so the page stays fast and there's nothing to credit.

Can I make a puzzle from my own photo?

Yes. Choose Practice, then Use your photo. The picture is cut up in your browser and never uploaded. It's cropped to 4:3 from the centre.

How do pieces snap into place?

Drop a piece within about a third of a piece of its home on the board and it clicks in and locks. Pieces don't rotate, so the picture is always the right way up.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. Press Tab to move from piece to piece and use the arrow keys to slide the chosen piece a quarter of a piece at a time (hold Shift for a whole piece). It locks in when it reaches its place.
