The formulas
- Ideal body weight (Devine): 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) + 2.3 kg × (height in inches − 60)
- Adjusted body weight: IBW + 0.4 × (actual weight − IBW); the factor can be changed
- Lean body weight (Janmahasatian): 9,270 × weight ÷ (6,680 + 216 × BMI) for men, ÷ (8,780 + 244 × BMI) for women
Worked example
A woman 165 cm (64.96 in) tall weighing 90 kg: IBW = 45.5 + 2.3 × 4.96 = 56.9 kg; she weighs 158% of it, so AjBW = 56.9 + 0.4 × (90 − 56.9) = 70.1 kg. Her BMI is 33.1 and her lean body weight 49.5 kg.
Kidney function with these weights is on the creatinine clearance calculator.
