How to split a bill
Choose the currency and whether to split equally or by what each person had.
Enter the bill and the number of people, or each person's own items and the shared dishes.
Add the tax and tip, and choose whether to round each share up.
Read what each person pays; any extra from rounding is shown.
Worked example
Four friends share a $120 bill and leave a 15% tip: $120 + $18 = $138.00, or $34.50 each. If the menu adds 8% tax and they tip on the amount before tax, the total is $120 + $9.60 + $18 = $147.60, or $36.90 each.
Shares are worked out to the cent and add up to the bill; rounding up only ever adds. Everything runs in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A $120 bill with a 15% tip is $138.00, so $34.50 each for four people.
Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?
Customs differ. In the US many people tip on the amount before tax, but plenty tip on the total. Tick 'Tip on the amount after tax' to include the tax; the difference is the tip percentage times the tax.
How do I split a bill when people ordered different things?
Choose 'By what each had', enter what each person ordered and the shared dishes. Shared items are split equally, and tax and tip are shared in proportion: Asha $24, Ben $12 and Chen $36 with $18 of starters, 8% tax and 15% tip pay $36.90, $22.14 and $51.66.
Why round each share up?
So nobody needs exact change. $87.40 with an 18% tip for three is $34.38 each; rounded up to $5 that's $35.00 each, $1.87 more than the bill, which can go to the tip.
What if the prices already include tax?
Tick 'Prices already include the tax' (common for VAT and GST menus). The tax inside the bill is shown, and the tip is worked out on the amount before tax unless you choose otherwise.
