Change Photo Background Colour

Swap the background of a portrait for plain white, blue, red or any colour. The person is found by an AI model that runs on your own device.

Runs on your device: an AI model made for people (the MediaPipe selfie segmenter) finds the person, and the photo is never uploaded. Hair and fine edges can look soft, so check the result before you use it.

How to change a photo's background colour

  1. Choose a photo of a person, ideally head and shoulders against a plain wall.
  2. The first time, the AI model loads (about 12 MB); then the person is found in a second or two.
  3. Pick the background: white, off-white, light grey, light blue, blue, red, or any other colour.
  4. Check the edge around the hair. Trim it or make it softer if needed, then download as JPG or PNG.
  5. For a passport-size print or an exact size in KB, press Passport photo under Next step: the passport photo maker opens with your new photo.

How it works

Google's MediaPipe selfie segmenter, a small AI model made for people (Apache 2.0 licence), gives every pixel a chance of being part of the person. The tool turns that into a clean edge, then paints everything else in your colour. Soft edge pixels are a mix of you and the old background, so the old colour is first taken out of them: otherwise a halo of the old wall would show around the hair.

Example: a pixel at the edge of a sleeve was half the person (100, 60, 40) and half a green wall (40, 160, 60), so the camera saw (70, 110, 50). Put on white with the green taken out, it becomes (177, 157, 147), half sleeve and half white. Without that step it would be (162, 182, 152): still greenish, a visible fringe.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my photo background to white?

Choose the photo, wait a few seconds while the person is found, keep White selected and download. If a thin line of the old background shows around your hair, move Trim the edge to 2 or 3 px.

Can I use this for a passport photo?

Check your country's rules first. Many passport offices, including those of the US, the UK, India, Australia and Singapore, ask for photos that haven't been altered or edited by software, so for those applications take the photo in front of a plain wall of the right colour. A changed background suits ID cards, school, exam and job forms, CVs and other uses that accept an edited photo.

Which colours can I choose?

Ready-made white, off-white, light grey, light blue, blue, red, or any other colour from the colour picker, for example a company colour for staff ID cards.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI model (Google's MediaPipe selfie segmenter, free to use under the Apache 2.0 licence) is downloaded once, about 12 MB with its runtime, and then runs inside your browser. The photo never leaves your device.

Why does the edge around the hair look soft?

The model is small and fast, and it isn't pixel-perfect: fine, loose hair is the hardest part. Use a photo with you in front of a plain, even background, facing the camera, and adjust Edge softness and Trim the edge until it looks right.

Does it work for products or pets?

No. The model is made to find people: it may miss a pet or an object, or treat it as background. It also works best with one person; with several, it may keep some and not others.
