MP4 to MP3

Save the sound from a video as an MP3: a lecture, an interview, a talk or a song you recorded. Several files at once, converted on your device.

Runs on your device: the video is never uploaded. MP3 at 192 kbit/s takes about 1.4 MB a minute; 320 kbit/s about 2.3 MB. Works in every modern browser; videos over 300 MB or 45 minutes need Chrome, Edge, Firefox on a computer or Safari 26.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. Choose one or more videos (or add more later).
  2. Pick MP3 and a bitrate (or WAV for lossless sound), and tick Convert only part of the video if you need a section.
  3. Press Convert to MP3, listen to each result and download it.

How it works

The video's sound track is decoded by your browser, the same way the Video to audio tool does it, then encoded to MP3 with LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder. Stereo and mono are kept; surround sound is mixed down to stereo. Videos over 45 minutes or 300 MB are read a piece at a time with the browser's WebCodecs audio decoder, so even a 2 GB video converts without running out of memory.

Example

A 4-minute video at 192 kbps: 192,000 ÷ 8 = 24,000 bytes a second, × 240 seconds = 5,760,000 bytes, which the tool shows as 5.49 MB. The same 4 minutes at 128 kbps is 3.66 MB, and at 320 kbps 9.16 MB.

Only convert videos you own or have permission to use. Ripping copyrighted music or films can break the law and platform terms.

MP3 files are encoded with LAME (lamejs 1.2.1, licensed under the LGPL-3.0), which is loaded unmodified as a separate file. Licence and source code.

Video files are read and written with Mediabunny 1.61.3 (Mozilla Public License 2.0), loaded unmodified as a separate file, and coded by your browser's own video and audio encoders (WebCodecs). Mediabunny reads the video files and, for long videos, hands the sound over a piece at a time. Licence and source code.

Frequently asked questions

Which bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is a good default for music and sounds the same as higher rates to most people. 128 kbps is plenty for talks, lectures and podcasts and makes smaller files. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 quality. Choosing more than the video's own sound (often 128–256 kbps) doesn't add quality.

How big will the MP3 be?

An MP3 at a constant bitrate takes bitrate ÷ 8 bytes a second: at 192 kbps that's 24,000 bytes a second, about 1.4 MB a minute; at 320 kbps about 2.3 MB a minute.

Can I convert only part of a video?

Yes. Tick Convert only part of the video and type the start and end (75 or 1:15). With several files, the same part is taken from each.

Does it work with MOV, MKV, WebM and audio files?

Yes: MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM, 3GP and TS videos, and audio files such as M4A, WAV and FLAC. The sound must be in a codec your browser can decode: AAC and MP3 work in every modern browser, but Dolby Digital (AC-3), found in some MKV files, only decodes in some browsers, such as Edge on Windows.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The sound is decoded and encoded on your device, so private recordings stay private. Long videos (over 45 minutes or 300 MB) are converted in pieces so they fit in memory; that needs Chrome, Edge, Firefox on a computer or Safari 26.
