How to use the numerology calculator

  1. Type your full name as on your birth certificate, in English letters, and pick your date of birth.
  2. Choose the Pythagorean (Western) or Chaldean (Indian) letter chart for the name numbers.
  3. Read each number with its working, then the name letter by letter and your Lo Shu grid.

Worked example

Priya Sharma was born on 14 March 1995. Her life path is 3 + 5 + 6 = 14 → 5, her mulank is 1 + 4 = 5 and her bhagyank 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 32 → 5. In the Pythagorean chart PRIYA is 7 + 9 + 9 + 7 + 1 = 33 and SHARMA 24, so her destiny number is 57 → 12 → 3. In the Chaldean chart the same name is 13 + 16 = 29 → 11 → 2. Her date's digits leave 2, 6, 7 and 8 empty in the Lo Shu grid, and 2026 is a personal year 9 for her.

The numbers and how they're found

  • Life path: month, day and year each reduced, then added and reduced
  • Destiny (expression): every letter of the full name; soul urge: the vowels; personality: the consonants
  • Birthday: the day of the month; maturity: life path + destiny
  • Mulank: day of birth reduced to 1–9; bhagyank: every digit of the date reduced to 1–9
  • Personal year: birth month + birth day + the calendar year, reduced

Frequently asked questions

How is the life path number calculated?

Reduce the month, day and year of birth to single digits (keeping 11, 22 and 33), add them and reduce again. For 14 March 1995: March is 3, 14 is 1 + 4 = 5, and 1995 is 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 24, then 2 + 4 = 6. 3 + 5 + 6 = 14, and 1 + 4 = 5, so the life path is 5. Some numerologists add every digit at once instead; when that gives a different answer, the calculator shows it.

What are master numbers?

11, 22 and 33. In Western numerology they are left as they are instead of being reduced to 2, 4 or 6, and are read as stronger versions of those numbers. Vedic mulank and bhagyank, and the Chaldean name number, are always reduced to 1–9.

What's the difference between Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology?

They give letters different values. The Pythagorean chart numbers the alphabet 1 to 9 in order (A = 1, B = 2 … I = 9, J = 1 again). The Chaldean chart, popular in India through Cheiro's books, groups letters by sound and uses only 1 to 8: A, I, J, Q and Y are 1, F and P are 8, and no letter is 9. So the same name usually gets a different number in each.

What are mulank and bhagyank?

Vedic numerology's two birth numbers. Mulank (the psychic or root number) is your day of birth reduced to one digit: born on the 14th, 1 + 4 = 5. Bhagyank (the destiny number) adds every digit of the full date: 14-03-1995 gives 32, then 5. Each number from 1 to 9 is paired with a planet, from 1 for the Sun to 9 for Mars.

What is the Lo Shu grid?

A 3 × 3 magic square (4 9 2 / 3 5 7 / 8 1 6) in which every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. Each digit of your date of birth is placed in its square, zeros are left out, and numerologists read the missing numbers and the complete lines. Some also add the mulank and bhagyank; tick the box to see that version.

Is numerology scientific?

No. There's no evidence that numbers derived from names or birth dates shape personality or fortune, and different systems give different numbers for the same person. The calculator does the arithmetic of each tradition exactly, so you can explore it for reflection and fun.
