  • US federal tax: the "half" of time and a half ($60.00 this week) is the part that can count as qualified overtime compensation for the federal deduction from 2025: up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 on a joint return), less above $150,000 ($300,000) of income.

How to use the overtime pay calculator

  1. Choose your currency and enter your pay an hour, or a week, month or year with your normal hours a week.
  2. Pick the overtime rules: US federal (1.5× over 40 hours a week), California (1.5× over 8 hours a day, 2× over 12), India (2× over 8 hours a day) or your own.
  3. Enter the hours you worked in the week or day, and change when overtime starts or its rate if your contract differs.
  4. Read your total pay, the regular and overtime parts and the overtime hourly rate.

Overtime pay formula

  • Regular pay = hours up to the limit × hourly rate
  • Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × overtime rate (1.5 for time and a half)
  • Double-time pay = hours after the second limit × hourly rate × 2

Example

You earn 20 an hour and worked 46 hours this week. Under the US federal rule the first 40 hours pay 800.00 and the other 6 are paid at 30 an hour, 180.00, for a total of 980.00: 60.00 more than 46 hours at the normal rate.

Rules in other countries

In the UK there's no legal right to extra pay for overtime: it depends on your contract, as long as your average pay doesn't fall below the minimum wage. Elsewhere, overtime rules come from national law, awards or collective agreements, so choose "My own" and enter your limit and rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate overtime pay?

Multiply your hourly rate by the overtime rate (1.5 for time and a half) to get the overtime hourly rate, then multiply by the overtime hours and add your regular pay. At 20 an hour, 46 hours in a week under the US federal rule is 40 × 20 = 800.00 plus 6 × 30 = 180.00, so 980.00 in all.

What is time and a half?

It means each overtime hour is paid at 1.5 times your normal hourly rate: 30 an hour if you normally earn 20. Double time is 2 times the normal rate. The calculator takes any rate, such as 1.25 or 2.5, if your contract says so.

When is overtime paid in the US?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, employers must pay covered, non-exempt employees at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. There's no federal daily overtime, but some states have it: in California, hours 8 to 12 in a workday are paid at 1.5× and hours after 12 at 2× (13 hours at 18 an hour is 288.00).

Is overtime pay tax-free in the US now?

Not entirely. From tax year 2025 there's a federal deduction for qualified overtime compensation of up to 12,500 a year (25,000 on a joint return), reduced once modified AGI is above 150,000 (300,000 joint). Only the "half" of time and a half required by the FLSA counts, so on 6 overtime hours at 20 an hour that's 6 × 10 = 60. The calculator shows that amount when you use the US federal rules.

How is overtime paid in India?

Under the labour codes in force since 21 November 2025, overtime wages must be at least twice the normal rate of wages (the Code on Wages, 2019), and the OSH Code sets a working day of up to 8 hours. So 10 hours in a day at 200 an hour is 8 × 200 + 2 × 400 = 2,400.00. Your state's rules and your employment terms can add more detail.

How do I work out overtime if I'm paid a salary?

Turn your pay into an hourly rate first: weekly pay ÷ your normal hours a week. A salary of 52,000 a year for 40 hours a week is 52,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = 25.00 an hour. Choose "a year", "a month" or "a week" next to your pay and the calculator does this for you.
