Add Page Numbers to PDF

Number the pages of any PDF for reports, assignments and submissions.

How to add page numbers

  1. Choose your PDF.
  2. Pick the position, the format and the number to start from.
  3. Tick Don't number the first page if the document has a cover.
  4. Download the numbered copy. Your original isn't changed.

Options

  • Position: bottom centre, bottom right, or top right.
  • Format: 1, Page 1, or Page 1 of N.
  • Start at: any number, for example 5 if earlier pages are in another file.
  • Skip cover: leaves the first page unnumbered and starts counting on page 2.

Example: a report with a cover

A 12-page report has a cover page. With Page 1 of N, start at 1 and the cover skipped, the cover stays clean and pages 2 to 12 show "Page 1 of 11" through "Page 11 of 11". The total counts only the numbered pages.

Details

Numbers are set in 10-point Helvetica in dark grey, about 8 mm from the edge, and they sit correctly on landscape and rotated pages too. Links, form fields and bookmarks are kept. If you also need to combine files, merge them first so the numbering runs across the whole document.

Frequently asked questions

Can I number from page 2?

Tick 'Don't number the first page'. The second page then shows your start number.

Will the numbers overlap my content?

They sit about 8 mm from the edge in small 10-point text. If your document has content there, try a different position.

Can I remove the numbers later?

They're drawn onto the pages, so they can't simply be switched off. Keep your original file if you might need an unnumbered copy.

Is the file uploaded?

No. It is processed locally in your browser.
