- Enter the area and choose its unit, such as 2.5 acres or 3 bigha.
- Choose the state whose bigha and katha you mean. Units like acre, hectare, cent and marla are the same everywhere.
- Read the area in every unit, and in whole bigha and katha (or kanal and marla) as your land papers write it.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in 1 bigha?
It depends on the state. A pucca bigha in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan is 27,225 sq ft; in West Bengal and Assam it's 14,400 sq ft; Gujarat and the Uttarakhand plains use 17,424 sq ft, Himachal Pradesh 8,712 sq ft and the Uttarakhand hills 6,806.25 sq ft. Choose the state in the converter to use its bigha.
How many bigha are in 1 acre?
An acre is 43,560 sq ft, so it's 1.6 bigha in Uttar Pradesh or Bihar, 3.025 bigha in West Bengal or Assam (3 bigha 0.5 katha in West Bengal, 3 bigha 2.5 lessa in Assam), 2.5 bigha in Gujarat and 5 bigha in Himachal Pradesh.
How many square feet are in a cent and a guntha?
A cent (also called a decimal or shatak) is a hundredth of an acre: 435.6 sq ft or 40.47 m². A guntha (gunta) is a fortieth of an acre: 1,089 sq ft or 101.17 m². Cents (decimals) are common in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Bihar, and guntha in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana.
What are kanal and marla?
They're the land units of the Punjab system, used in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. A marla is 272.25 sq ft, 20 marla make a kanal of 5,445 sq ft, and 8 kanal make a killa, which is an acre. A hectare is 19 kanal 15 marla 3.32 sarsai. Old records in a few districts measured with a shorter karam, so their marla and kanal are slightly smaller: check the one on your papers.
How do I convert hectares to acres?
Multiply by 2.4711: a hectare is 10,000 m², which is 1,07,639.1 sq ft or 2.4711 acres. The other way, an acre is 0.4047 hectare (4,046.86 m²).
Why is the bigha different in every state?
The bigha is a traditional unit that each region defined in its own way, long before metric units, and revenue records still use the local size. It can differ between districts of one state too: Bihar's katha is larger in Muzaffarpur and West Champaran, for example. Sources disagree for Punjab and Haryana (anything from about 9,000 to 27,225 sq ft), so the converter doesn't guess there: use kanal and marla, which are fixed.
