How to turn audio into a video
- Choose the audio file, then a picture such as cover art, a logo or a photo (optional: without one you get a coloured background).
- Pick the shape (16:9 for YouTube, 1:1 for feeds, 9:16 for Reels and Shorts) and a waveform style and colour.
- Press Make video and download the WebM file.
How it works
The loudness of the audio is measured every 20 milliseconds. For each video frame, the four seconds of sound around that moment are split into bars, each as tall as the loudest part of its slice compared with the loudest moment of the whole track. The frames and the sound are then encoded in your browser into one video file.
Example
A 3-minute clip with a waveform has 25 frames a second: 180 × 25 = 4,500 frames at 1280 × 720, encoded at about 1.8 Mbit/s (1280 × 720 × 25 × 0.08 bits). With no waveform the picture doesn't move, so 2 frames a second are enough: 360 frames at the 0.5 Mbit/s minimum, a much smaller file with the same sound.
Tips
- Trim the audio to the best part first with the Audio cutter: short clips work best on social media.
- Want a still image of the waveform instead? Use the Waveform image generator.
- Several photos instead of one? Use the Slideshow maker with your audio as the music.
