What CLAT asks for
CLAT's instructions ask only for a recent, front facing photo with a plain background and your signature; the form's help text adds a light background, black or blue ink on white, and Jpeg/png. No CLAT page prints a pixel size or a KB limit. The pixel sizes in the table are the ones the form's own cropper saves, read from the portal's script.
| Upload | Pixels | File size | Format | Background |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photograph | 200 × 230 px (the form's cropper) | no file-size limit | Jpeg/png | Plain (instructions); light (form help). No colour is named. |
| Signature | 140 × 60 px (the form's cropper) | no file-size limit | Jpeg/png | White, with black or blue ink |

“Signature of the candidate”
“Upload your signature in Jpeg/png format. Signature should be in black/blue with white background.”
How to use the CLAT photo and signature resizer
- Choose a recent, front facing photo for card 1 and a picture of your signature in black or blue ink on white paper for card 2.
- Drag or zoom the photo until your face is centred in the 200 × 230 px (the form's cropper) frame, on a plain, light background. Frame the signature across the 140 × 60 px (the form's cropper) strip and tap Whiten the paper.
- When both checklists are green, download the two files and choose them in the application form, then crop them in the form's own cropper.
Example: a phone photo through the CLAT resizer
- Photograph: an 8-megapixel phone photo, 2,448 × 3,264 px, opens as a 1,800 × 2,400 px copy; the frame at the notice's 200 × 230 px shape covers 1,800 × 2,070 px, drawn smaller, at 200 × 230 px. The JPEG is any size, so 95% quality, named clat-photo-200x230.jpg.
The JPEG quality it lands on depends on the picture itself.
Where 200 × 230 px (the form's cropper) and 140 × 60 px (the form's cropper) come from
The CLAT form doesn't keep the file you upload as it is. It opens every photo and signature in a cropper in your browser, and the portal's script (version 11.2) sets the cropper's result to 200 × 230 px (the form's cropper) for the photo and 140 × 60 px (the form's cropper) for the signature. It saves that result as a PNG, because the script sets no other format. So no particular upload size or KB is needed; what matters is the framing. Making your files at the same sizes here lets you judge the framing at the size the form keeps, with a white background and clean paper.
Because these numbers come from the portal's code rather than a notice, the Consortium could change them in a later version. If the cropper on your screen shows a different shape, follow the form.
Signature tips for CLAT
Sign in black or blue ink on plain white paper, across rather than in a tall block, because the 140 × 60 px (the form's cropper) strip is more than twice as wide as it is high. Leave a little white space around the ink so the crop doesn't cut a stroke. Neither the photo nor the signature needs to be attested. The declaration isn't an upload: it's a checkbox in the form.
On exam day
CLAT 2027 is a pen-and-paper exam on 6 December 2026, and applications close on 31 October 2026, according to the press release of 22 July 2026. The Test Day Instructions weren't out when we checked, so it isn't known yet whether the centre takes a photo; nothing in the application form uses a webcam.
Why CLAT uploads get rejected
CLAT's instructions don't list rejection reasons for the photo or signature. The form itself refuses:
- The photo and signature fields take only image files (gif, png, jpg, jpeg or ico); anything else gets "Please Select only images".
- Certificates (category, PwD, BPL) are separate uploads and must be PDFs under 1.5MB: "Upload your relevant document in PDF format.(Size should be less than 1.5MB)".
How the tool makes the files
Each file is drawn at its exact pixel size and saved as a JPEG at 95% quality. CLAT sets no file-size limit, so there is nothing to squeeze, and the checklist confirms the size and format from the finished file. For a passport size print of the same photo, use the Passport Size Photo Maker.
Check before you apply
- No CLAT 2027 notice prints a pixel, KB, cm or DPI rule. 200 × 230 px and 140 × 60 px are the sizes the form's cropper saves (portal script version 11.2), so the tool makes those and sets no KB limit. KB or DPI figures quoted for CLAT elsewhere aren't from a Consortium source.
- The form re-crops every upload and saves the result as a PNG (its cropper sets no other format), so the JPEG from this tool is the picture you crop from, not the final file.
- The Consortium could change the cropper sizes in a later version of the portal script; check the form when you upload.
- The CLAT 2027 Test Day Instructions weren't out on 8 October 2026, so it isn't known yet whether the exam centre takes a photo.
- The same rules apply to UG and PG; the declaration is a checkbox in the form, not an upload.
