How to use the gold price calculator

  1. Enter the weight in grams, choose the purity and enter the jeweller's rate per gram (for that purity or for 24K).
  2. Enter the making charges as a percentage, per gram or in total.
  3. Add stones or an old-gold exchange if you have them, then read the total and the price per gram.

Worked example

A 10 g 22K chain at ₹10,000 a gram with 12% making charges: ₹1,00,000 of gold and ₹12,000 of making, ₹3,360 of GST at 3%, so ₹1,15,360, or ₹11,536 a gram all in. Exchanging 5 g of old 22K gold with a 2% deduction is worth ₹49,000, leaving ₹66,360 to pay. Having a goldsmith make a piece from your own gold for ₹8,000 of making charges costs ₹8,400 with 5% GST.

Frequently asked questions

How is the price of gold jewellery calculated?

Gold value (weight × the rate for its purity) plus making charges, plus any stones or other charges, plus GST at 3% on all of it. For 10 g of 22K at ₹10,000 a gram with 12% making: ₹1,00,000 + ₹12,000 = ₹1,12,000, plus ₹3,360 GST = ₹1,15,360.

What is the GST on gold jewellery and making charges?

3% of the whole bill when you buy jewellery from a jeweller, making charges included, whether or not they're shown on a separate line (CBIC's FAQ on gems and jewellery). 5% applies only when a goldsmith makes or repairs a piece from your own gold, and then only on the making charges.

What is the difference between 22K and 24K gold?

Purity: 24K is 99.9% gold (marked 999) and 22K is 91.6% (marked 916), with the rest other metals for strength, so most jewellery is 22K. 18K is 75% (750) and 14K 58.5% (585). If you only have the 24K rate, a gram of 22K is worth about 916 ÷ 999 of it.

What are making charges?

The jeweller's charge for making the piece, quoted as a percentage of the gold value or as rupees per gram, sometimes with wastage added. They vary by jeweller and design and can often be negotiated; the calculator shows them as a percentage of the gold so you can compare quotes.

How does an old gold exchange work?

The jeweller tests your old gold's purity, values it at the day's rate for that purity and usually deducts a small percentage for melting losses. Selling old gold as an individual carries no GST, so its value comes off your bill after GST is added to the new piece.

How do I check the purity of gold jewellery?

Look for the BIS hallmark: the BIS logo, the purity grade (such as 22K916) and a 6-digit HUID code, which you can verify in the BIS Care app. Hallmarking has been mandatory for gold jewellery in most of India since 2021.
