For the weighted GPA, honors classes add 0.5 and AP / IB classes add 1.0 (not to an F). Leave the grade empty to skip a class.

How to use the GPA calculator

  1. Pick each class's letter grade, its credit hours (a typical high-school class is 1 credit; a college class is often 3 or 4) and whether it's honors or AP / IB.
  2. Check the plus and minus values your school uses. Most use steps of 0.3 (B+ = 3.3); some use thirds (B+ = 3.33).
  3. Your term GPA updates as you type. Add your earlier GPA and credits to get your cumulative GPA, and use the last section to see what you need next term.

GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits, where quality points = grade points × credits.

Worked example

  • English: A (4) × 3 credits = 12 quality points
  • Biology (honors): B+ (3.3) × 4 credits = 13.2 quality points
  • US History (AP): A− (3.7) × 3 credits = 11.1 quality points
  • Spanish: B (3) × 3 credits = 9 quality points

That's 45.3 quality points over 13 credits, so the unweighted GPA is 45.3 ÷ 13 = 3.48. With +0.5 for the honors class and +1.0 for the AP class, the weighted quality points are 50.3 and the weighted GPA is 3.87.

If you had a 3.20 GPA over 60 credits before this term, your cumulative GPA becomes (3.20 × 60 + 45.3) ÷ 73 = 3.25. And to lift a 3.00 GPA over 60 credits to 3.20 with 30 more credits, you need (3.20 × 90 − 3.00 × 60) ÷ 30 = 3.60 on those credits.

Tips

  • Pass/fail, withdrawn and audited classes usually don't count towards GPA. Leave their grade empty.
  • Some registrars cut GPAs to two decimals instead of rounding (3.4846 becomes 3.48 either way, but 3.479 would show as 3.47), so your transcript may differ by 0.01.
  • Colleges often recalculate applicants' GPAs on their own scale, so report the GPA exactly as your transcript shows it.
  • Studying in India? Use the CGPA to percentage calculator or the marks percentage calculator.

Grade points checked on 2 October 2026 against Oregon State University's grading system (steps of 0.3) and Portland State University's GPA calculation (thirds); the method follows College Board and university registrars. Honors and AP weights follow common US high-school practice, such as Fairfax County Public Schools. Your school's rules come first.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each letter grade has grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0). Multiply each class's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, add them up, and divide by the total credits. With equal credits that's just the average of the grade points.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every class. A weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, commonly 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. Schools set their own bonuses, and many colleges recalculate GPAs their own way, so check your school's handbook.

Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?

At most US colleges and high schools an A+ counts as 4.0, the same as an A. Some give it 4.3 or 4.33. Choose what your school uses at the top of the calculator.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Multiply your GPA so far by the credits it covers, add this term's quality points, and divide by all your credits. Enter your transcript's GPA and credits under Cumulative GPA and the calculator does it for you.

Can I use this for an Indian CGPA?

No. Indian schools and universities usually grade on a 10-point CGPA. Use the CGPA to percentage calculator for CBSE or your university's formula instead.
