Annotate PDF

Mark up a PDF the way you would on paper: highlight, underline and strike through words, add sticky-note comments, draw and box parts of the page, then download it with real PDF annotations.

Annotated in your browser; the PDF is never uploaded. Your marks are saved as standard PDF annotations, the kind Adobe Acrobat makes, so readers that support comments list them and let you edit or delete them. Annotations already in the PDF are kept.

How to annotate a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF. The first page opens with the Highlight tool ready.
  2. Drag across the words you want to mark, the way you select text. The mark snaps to whole words and follows the lines; drag down to take in several lines of a paragraph. Switch to Underline or Strikethrough the same way, and pick a colour from the swatches.
  3. To add a comment, tap Comment in the small bar next to the mark and type it. Use Note to put a sticky note anywhere, Draw to circle or sign, and Box to frame a table or picture.
  4. Move between pages with the page buttons, add your name if you want it shown as the author, and click Download annotated PDF.

Example: reviewing a contract

Say a three-page rental agreement needs two changes. On page 1, highlight "The rent is due on the 1st of each month" and add the comment "Can we make this the 5th?". On page 2, strike through "30 days" in the notice clause and put a note beside it saying "45 days, as agreed on the phone". The list under the page now shows three annotations: a highlight on page 1 with its comment, a strikethrough and a note on page 2. After you download, the other person opens the file in their own reader and sees each mark with your comment, name and the date, and can reply or mark it as done there. The contract's own text is exactly as it was.

Tips

  • Tap or click a mark to open its comment box again; use Select to move notes, drawings and boxes, or the arrow keys to nudge them (Shift for bigger steps). Delete removes the selected mark, and Ctrl+Z undoes.
  • On a phone, zoom in before marking small text: spread two fingers on the page or pick a Zoom level, and move around with two fingers. One finger marks, draws and places notes.
  • Highlights snap to the words pdf.js finds on the page, so they line up with the text even on small fonts. Text that runs vertically or at an angle can't be selected by dragging; use a box there.
  • Annotations already in the PDF stay as they are. The list under the page shows only the ones you add here, and each one can be opened from the list.
  • Without a mouse, Tab to the page and press Enter to add a note, type it, and move it with the arrow keys.

Frequently asked questions

Will my highlights and comments show in Adobe Acrobat and other PDF readers?

Yes. Each mark is saved as a standard PDF annotation (Highlight, Underline, StrikeOut, Text for notes, Ink for drawings and Square for boxes) with its own drawn appearance, so it looks the same everywhere. Readers with a comments panel list them with your comment, name and date, and let you reply, edit or delete them; simpler viewers show them on the page.

How is this different from the PDF editor?

The PDF editor draws text, white-out and images into the page itself. Annotations stay separate review marks on top of the page: anyone can see who made them, hide them, reply to them or delete them later, and the original page is untouched.

Can I add a comment to a highlight?

Yes. After you highlight, underline or strike through words, a small bar appears next to them: tap Comment and type in the box that opens. It is saved inside that annotation, so readers show it when you point at or open the highlight. A sticky note is a comment on its own, placed anywhere on the page.

Can I highlight a scanned PDF?

A scan is a picture of the page with no text inside, so there are no words to snap to. Drag over the part you want and that rectangle is highlighted, underlined or struck through instead.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened, marked up and saved in your browser, so contracts and other private documents stay on your device. Password-protected PDFs open after you type the password; the annotated copy has no password.

How do I stop anyone removing the annotations?

Annotations can always be edited or deleted in a PDF reader; that is what makes them comments. To make them part of the page, run the annotated file through Flatten PDF, which turns comments, highlights and stamps into ordinary page content.
