Letter grades

Weighted grade

Enter each grade as a percentage (88) or as points (44/50), and its weight in the course. Leave the grade empty for work you haven't done yet.

How to use the grade calculator

  1. Under Weighted grade, add a row for each assignment, test or category with its grade and its weight from your syllabus. Leave the grade empty for work that's still to come.
  2. Your weighted grade and letter grade update as you type.
  3. Under What do I need on the final?, tap the button to copy your grade across, or type your current grade, the final's weight and the grade you want.

How a weighted grade is calculated

Weighted grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight), over the work graded so far.

  • Homework: 92% × 15 = 1,380
  • Quizzes: 85% × 15 = 1,275
  • Midterm: 78% × 25 = 1,950
  • Project: 88% × 20 = 1,760

That's 6,365 ÷ 75 = 84.87%, a B, with 25% of the course (the final) still to come.

Final exam grade formula

Score needed on the final = (grade you want − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight as a decimal (25% = 0.25).

With 85% now and a final worth 25%, getting 87% overall needs (87 − 85 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (87 − 63.75) ÷ 0.25 = 93% on the final. A score of 80% on the same final would leave you with 63.75 + 80 × 0.25 = 83.75%.

Letter grades

The calculator uses the common US plus/minus scale below. Schools differ: some don't use plus and minus grades, and others have different cut-offs, so check your syllabus. Switch the calculator to "A–F only" for a plain 90/80/70/60 scale.

A93–100
A−90–92.99
B+87–89.99
B83–86.99

C−70–72.99

Tips

Letter-grade bands checked on 2 October 2026 against the University of the Incarnate Word and Columbia School of Professional Studies grading scales, and College Board for A–F without plus and minus. Your school's scale comes first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my weighted grade?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights. For example, 90% on homework worth 40% and 80% on a test worth 60% gives (90 × 40 + 80 × 60) ÷ 100 = 84%.

What grade do I need on my final exam?

Take the grade you want, subtract your current grade times the share of the course you've already done, and divide by the final's weight: needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With 85% now and a final worth 25%, getting 87% overall needs (87 − 63.75) ÷ 0.25 = 93% on the final.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

That usually means some work isn't graded yet. The calculator divides by the weights you've entered, so the result is your grade on the work done so far. If your course uses points instead of percentages, enter the points each item is worth as its weight and it works the same way.

Is an 89.5% an A or a B?

On the common US scale, 89.5% is a B+, because an A− starts at 90%. Some teachers round to the nearest whole percent, which would make it a 90 and an A−. Your syllabus says which rule your class uses.

Can I enter points instead of percentages?

Yes. Type the score as points, such as 44/50, and the calculator turns it into a percentage (88%). Fill in the weight as usual.

How do I turn my grades into a GPA?

A GPA uses grade points for each letter grade and the credit hours of each class, not percentages. Put your letter grades into the GPA calculator to get your term and cumulative GPA.
