Worked example

A job advertised at £30,000 for 37.5 hours a week, worked for 22.5 hours, is 0.6 of full time: £18,000 a year, £1,500 a month, £346.15 a week, at the same £15.38 an hour as full time. Starting on 1 April with a calendar-year salary, 275 of 365 days are left, so the year's pay is £13,561.64. With 33 days of full-time holiday, the pro-rata holiday is 19.8 days.

The formula

  • FTE = your hours ÷ full-time hours (or your days ÷ full-time days)
  • Pro-rata salary = full-time salary × FTE
  • Part year = pro-rata salary × days worked ÷ days in the year
  • Pro-rata holiday = full-time holiday × FTE

The UK holiday minimum comes from the Working Time Regulations 1998. Everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a pro-rata salary?

Multiply the full-time salary by your hours divided by the full-time hours. A £30,000 job on 37.5 hours a week, worked for 22.5 hours, pays £30,000 × 22.5 ÷ 37.5 = £18,000 a year. With days instead of hours, use your days ÷ full-time days.

What does "pro rata" mean in a job advert?

"£30,000 pro rata" means £30,000 is the full-time salary, and you'll be paid the share that matches your hours. The hourly rate stays the same as for a full-time worker.

What is FTE?

Full-time equivalent: your hours as a fraction of full time. 22.5 of 37.5 hours is 0.6 FTE, and 3 days out of 5 is also 0.6. Pay, holiday and some benefits are usually multiplied by it.

How is pay worked out if I start part way through the year?

By the share of the year you work. Starting on 1 April, 275 of the year's 365 days are left, so the £18,000 pro-rata salary pays £13,561.64 for the rest of the year. Some employers count working days (Monday to Friday) instead, which the calculator can also do.

How is holiday pro-rated for part-time work?

The full-time holiday is multiplied by your FTE: 33 days (25 plus 8 bank holidays) × 0.6 = 19.8 days. In the UK the legal minimum is 5.6 weeks, so 16.8 days for someone working 3 days a week.

Is pro-rata pay before or after tax?

Before. The calculator shows gross pay; income tax and other deductions depend on where you live and are worked out on the pro-rata amount.
