What NSP asks for
NSP has one rule for every document a student uploads, Fresh or Renewal: a PDF, JPG or JPEG of 20–500 KB on the live AY 2026-27 form. Older NSP documents and some scheme FAQs still say 200 KB or less, so the tool aims for 20–200 KB, which meets both. NSP sets no pixel size, so your own crop is kept. Which documents you need depends on your scheme.
| Upload | Pixels | File size | Format | Background |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scholarship document | Not set | 20–500 KB we aim for 20–200 KB | pdf/ jpg/ jpeg | Not stated |
Scholarship document: the notice's words
“Document should be in pdf/ jpg/ jpeg format and file size must be in between 20kb to 500kb.”
“Note: Document should be in pdf/ jpg/ jpeg format and file size must be in between 20kb to 200kb”
“The format of the file should be .pdf and .jpeg and the size of each document should not exceed more than 200 KB. Also please upload documents which are clearly visible.”
Why 20–200 KB: The live AY 2026-27 form takes 20–500 KB, but the NSP user manual and some scheme FAQs on the NSP site still say 200 KB or less. A file of 20–200 KB passes both.
How to use the NSP document resizer
- Lay the document flat in daylight and take a straight photo from above, or scan it. Choose it in the card.
- Turn it with Turn 90° if it's sideways and zoom until the page fills the frame with a thin margin. Tap Whiten the paper so the background turns white and the text stays dark.
- When the checklist is green, download the JPG. Do the next document the same way, then upload each one at the Upload Documents step.
Example: a phone photo through the NSP resizer
- Scholarship document: a 10-megapixel phone picture of the paper, 3,648 × 2,736 px, opens as a 2,400 × 1,800 px copy; with no shape set, the frame is the whole 2,400 × 1,800 px, kept at 2,400 × 1,800 px. The JPEG is 20,480 to 200,000 bytes (20–500 KB, aiming for 20–200 KB), named nsp-document-2400x1800.jpg. Over the limit even at 60% quality, it would get fewer pixels, same shape.
The JPEG quality it lands on depends on the picture itself.
Making a document readable inside 200 KB
The portal's own checks are the size, the format and the file name; whether the page can be read is up to you. The MoTA FAQ asks you to upload documents which are clearly visible, and NSP's operating procedure asks you to make sure they are clear and readable. A few things help. Crop off the table or floor around the page, because every extra pixel costs file size. Whitening the paper removes grey shading, which JPEG spends a lot of bytes on, so more of the 200 KB goes to the text. And after you download, zoom in on the stamp, signature and numbers: if you can't read them, nobody else can either. Take the photo again closer, or in better light.
Documents with more than one page
Each document is one upload, so a two-page certificate or a passbook with a separate account page has to go in as one PDF. Make each page here if you want them whitened, join them with Image to PDF, and bring the PDF under the limit with Compress PDF to Size. NSP's own Compress PDF helper on the upload page works too, but it takes PDFs only. Keep the file name at least 4 characters long before the extension.
The live photo in the NSP form
NSP takes no photo in the application form. Your One Time Registration (OTR) needs Aadhaar face authentication instead: you use the UIDAI AadhaarFaceRD app and the NSP OTR Android app (eKYC with FaceAuth), and your profile photo comes from that eKYC. You can't upload or edit the profile photo in the application form; to change it, refresh your eKYC in OTR.
“Face-authentication is mandatory for generation of OTR.”
So the only photo NSP takes is your face during OTR, on your phone. There's nothing to make for it on this page.
Why NSP uploads get rejected
These are the messages the NSP form shows when it refuses a document:
- A file under 20 KB or over 500 KB: "File size must be in between 20 KB and 500 KB".
- A PNG or any format other than PDF, JPG or JPEG: "Unsupported file format. Please upload a PDF or JPEG/ JPG image."
- A file name shorter than 8 characters including its extension (abc.jpg): "File name must be at least 4 characters long."
How the tool reaches the KB range
Your crop is drawn at up to 2,400 pixels on its longest side and saved as a JPEG at the highest quality that stays under 200 KB. If even 60% quality is too big, which is common for a full-page phone photo, the pixel size is reduced, keeping the page's shape, and the quality search runs again. A file below 20 KB, such as a small, plain page, gets an invisible comment added until it reaches the minimum, without touching the picture. The checklist is read from the finished file.
Check before you apply
- The live AY 2026-27 form says 20–500 KB; the NSP user manual (July 2024) and some scheme FAQs still say 200 KB or less. The tool aims for 20–200 KB, which passes both. Check the note on your own Upload Documents screen.
- The portal counts 1 KB as 1,024 bytes: a file must be at least 20,480 bytes. The tool's aim keeps it between 20,480 and 200,000 bytes.
- The file picker on the NSP form opens showing PDFs only, but JPG and JPEG files pass its check. Switch the picker to all files to choose your JPG.
- Which documents you need, and whether your scheme asks for a student photograph as a document, depends on the scheme and the year. Your profile photo isn't uploaded: it comes from your Aadhaar eKYC through OTR.
- Students upload no signature, thumb impression or declaration image. You accept the terms with checkboxes, and a certificate in a ministry's format is printed, signed, stamped and uploaded as a document.
- Photo and signature pixel sizes in a PM-USPY (SSS J&K & Ladakh) file on the NSP site are for that scheme, which registers on the AICTE portal: they're not the NSP student form's rule. The 50–500 KB PDF limit in the institute KYC manual is for institutes, not students.
