Frequently asked questions
How does matching by name work?
Each name's first sound points to one of the 108 nakshatra padas (the namakshar), which gives a nakshatra and a rashi. The eight kootas of Ashtakoot Guna Milan are then scored from those, out of 36, exactly as for birth stars.
Is matching by name as reliable as by birth chart?
Astrologers treat it as a substitute when birth details aren't known: the name gives the star that was chosen for the name, not the Moon's position at birth. Where both people know their birth details, match by birth star instead with the Guna Milan calculator.
What if a name could mean two nakshatras?
Some sounds written in English letters belong to two padas (for example Ta for त or ट). The tool asks which one, and you can also pick the starting sound yourself.
How many gunas are a good match?
Traditionally 18 or more of 36 is acceptable and more is better; Nadi dosha (both in the same Nadi) and Bhakoot dosha are checked separately because they're often considered important on their own.
