What is a rashi?

In Vedic astrology your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, on the sidereal zodiac. It's the sign used for horoscopes, naming and Guna Milan, and it's often different from the Western sun sign.

Why is my rashi different from my sun sign?

A Western sun sign is where the Sun was, on the tropical zodiac; a rashi is where the Moon was, on the sidereal zodiac, which today starts about 24° away. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so the two rarely match.

How is rashi found from a name?

The first sound of the name points to one of the 108 nakshatra padas, and each rashi holds nine padas. Aarav starts with A, Krittika pada 1, so the name rashi is Mesha (Aries). This name rashi is used for naming and matching; your birth rashi comes from the Moon.

Does the birth time matter?

Only near a change of sign. The tool shows the range of birth times that give the same rashi, usually two or three days around your birth, so for most people the date is enough.
