Working out the panchang…
Example: New Delhi, 12 August 2026
The day of the total solar eclipse is a Budhavara with Krishna Amavasya at sunrise, ending at 23:07: the new moon. The nakshatra is Pushya (pada 4) until 08:00, the yoga Vyatipata until 15:26 and the karana Chatushpada. Sunrise is at 05:49 and sunset at 19:03, so Rahu kaal (the fifth eighth of the day on a Wednesday) runs from 12:26 to 14:05.
How the panchang is worked out
Tithi: every 12° the Moon moves ahead of the Sun; 30 make a lunar month, 15 in the bright half (Shukla) and 15 in the dark half (Krishna).
Nakshatra: the Moon's sidereal position in 27 parts of 13°20′, each with four padas.
Yoga: the Sun's and Moon's sidereal positions added together, in 27 parts of 13°20′.
Karana: half a tithi; seven of the eleven repeat through the month.
Day periods: Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika are one-eighth of the time from sunrise to sunset each, at a place set by the weekday; Abhijit muhurat is the eighth of fifteen parts, around midday.

Frequently asked questions
What are the five parts of the panchang?
Vara (the weekday), tithi (the lunar day), nakshatra (the Moon's lunar mansion), yoga (from the Sun's and Moon's positions together) and karana (half a tithi). Panch-ang means five limbs.
Why does the tithi change in the middle of the day?
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun, between about 19 and 26 hours, so it rarely lines up with the calendar day. Panchangs name the tithi running at sunrise and give the time it ends; the tool does the same.
Which ayanamsa does it use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), as published in the Indian Astronomical Ephemeris of the India Meteorological Department's Positional Astronomy Centre, with the Moon and Sun positions from the astronomy-engine library. The tithi doesn't depend on the ayanamsa; the nakshatra, yoga and signs do.
Why are times different from another panchang?
Sunrise is taken at the Sun's upper edge with normal refraction, and times are for the town you choose, so a panchang made for another city or with the Sun's centre can differ by a few minutes. Traditions also differ on some period tables, such as Yamaganda.
Is Rahu kaal shown here?
Yes, with Yamaganda, Gulika kaal and Abhijit muhurat, all worked out from that day's sunrise and sunset for your town. For a week of Rahu kaal times, use the Rahu kaal page.
