How to make your signature
- Choose Draw and sign in the box with a mouse, finger or stylus, or choose Type, enter your name and pick a style.
- Pick the ink colour. For a drawn signature, set the pen thickness; Undo removes the last stroke and Clear starts again.
- Check the preview. The checkerboard shows that the background is transparent.
- Download the PNG (or the SVG of a drawn signature), or copy the image and paste it where you need it.
Where to use it
- PDFs: Sign PDF lets you draw straight onto a page. To place this PNG exactly where you want it, use the PDF editor's image tool.
- Emails: add the PNG as an image in your email app's signature settings.
- Documents: insert the PNG as a picture in your word processor. The transparent background lets it sit over lines and coloured paper.
- Forms with size limits: if a form wants a JPG of a set size, open the PNG in the image resizer or image compressor; JPGs get a white background.
How it works
The drawing box is 600 × 240 units, whatever your screen size. Your strokes are recorded as points and joined with smooth curves that bend through each point, so a shaky hand still gives clean lines. The thickness stays the same along the whole stroke, and you can change the colour or thickness after drawing. On download, the image is cropped to the ink with a small margin and drawn at twice the size so it stays sharp. Typed styles use fonts already on your device, so nothing extra is downloaded.
Worked example
Say your strokes span 400 × 120 units and the pen is 4 units thick. Half the pen width is added on each side, so the ink box is 404 × 124. A margin of 8 units on every side makes it 420 × 140, and doubling gives an 840 × 280 pixel PNG. The SVG is 420 × 140 and, being vector, stays sharp at any size.
Tips for a neat signature
- Draw slowly. Fast strokes are recorded with fewer points, so curves look more angular.
- Sign large, across most of the box. It's scaled down when you use it, which hides small wobbles.
- A pen tablet, or a stylus on a phone or tablet, feels most like paper. On a laptop, a mouse is easier than a touchpad.
- Keep the file private: anyone who has it can paste your signature.
A signature image is not a digital signature
This tool makes a picture of your signature. An image of your signature is not the same as a certified digital signature, which is created with a certificate issued to the signer. If you're asked for a certified digital signature, use a service that provides one.
