Short, light presses are faster than pressing the key all the way down each time.
Keyboards differ: a light switch with a short travel helps.

Frequently asked questions
How does the spacebar clicker work?
It counts each press of the space bar from your first press until the time runs out, then divides by the seconds: 50 presses in 10 seconds is 5 presses per second.
Does holding the space bar down count?
No. When you hold a key, the computer repeats it on its own; the test ignores those repeats and counts only real presses.
Why doesn't the page scroll when I press space?
The test catches the space bar so the page stays still while you press. It lets go when you're typing in a box or using a button.
Can I use it on a phone?
Phones have no space bar, so tap the big bar instead; the score counts taps the same way.
Which test length is best?
5 or 10 seconds shows your top speed; 30 to 100 seconds shows how long you can keep it up. Your best score is kept separately for each length, in this browser only.
