Frequently asked questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in FY 2026-27?

Under the new regime, yes. The Section 87A rebate makes tax zero when taxable income is up to ₹12,00,000. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, a salary of up to ₹12,75,000 pays no tax. Income taxed at special rates, such as capital gains, is not covered by this rebate.

Did Budget 2026 change the tax slabs?

No. Budget 2026 kept the FY 2025-26 slabs, rebate, standard deduction, surcharge and cess unchanged for FY 2026-27. From 1 April 2026 the rules sit under the new Income-tax Act, 2025.

Which regime should I choose?

The new regime has lower rates but almost no deductions. The old regime can win if you claim large deductions such as 80C, 80D, HRA and home loan interest. Enter your numbers above: the calculator compares both and shows the saving.

What is marginal relief?

If your income is just above a threshold (₹12 lakh for the rebate, or ₹50 lakh / ₹1 crore for surcharge), marginal relief ensures the extra tax is never more than the extra income. The calculator applies it automatically.
