South Asians tend to carry more body fat and face higher diabetes and heart risk at a lower BMI, so Indian guidelines use the lower Asia-Pacific cut-offs.

Formula

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Example: 80 kg at 1.80 m gives 80 ÷ 3.24 = 24.7, which is overweight by the Asian cut-offs.

BMI doesn't separate muscle from fat. Athletes can show a high BMI while being lean. Waist size (under 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women is commonly advised in India) adds useful context.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI for Indians?

18.5 to 22.9 under the Asia-Pacific cut-offs used in India. 23–24.9 is overweight and 25 or more is obese.

Is BMI accurate?

It is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It doesn't account for muscle mass, age or fat distribution. Use it together with waist size and a doctor's advice.
