How to convert HEIC to PDF
- Choose your HEIC photos. JPG, PNG and WebP photos can go in the same PDF.
- Put them in order with the arrows; each photo becomes one page.
- Pick the page size (A4, US Letter or the photo's own size), orientation and margins.
- Press Create PDF and download it.
How the pages are laid out
Each photo is turned the right way up, then scaled to fit inside the margins and centred on its page. Photos are only ever shrunk, never enlarged, so a small picture isn't blurred. With Auto orientation, a landscape photo gets a landscape page; choose Portrait or Landscape to keep every page the same way round.
Example: a 12-megapixel iPhone photo on A4
A 4032 × 3024 pixel landscape photo with 10 mm margins (28.3 points) gets a landscape A4 page of 841.9 × 595.3 points. The space inside the margins is 785.2 × 538.6 points, so the photo is scaled by the smaller of 785.2 ÷ 4032 and 538.6 ÷ 3024, which is the height. It is printed at 718.1 × 538.6 points, about 253 × 190 mm, centred. Forced onto a portrait US Letter page instead, the same photo fills the width: 555.3 × 416.5 points, about 196 × 147 mm.
Why iPhone photos are HEIC
iPhones save photos in Apple's High Efficiency format, as HEIC files, which keep the same picture in a smaller file than JPG. Windows, many Android phones and most upload forms can't open it, but a PDF opens everywhere. To make the iPhone take JPG photos instead, Apple's setting is Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible.
Tips
- Need separate JPG files rather than a PDF? Use HEIC to JPG.
- If a form limits the PDF to a size in KB, choose Smaller file here, then use Compress PDF to size if it is still too big.
- For other image formats such as TIFF, GIF or SVG, use Image to PDF.
- Big batches use a lot of memory on phones: if your phone struggles, make the PDF in two parts and join them with Merge PDF.
HEIC photos are decoded with libheif and libde265 (libheif-js 1.23.2, licensed under the LGPL-3.0), loaded unmodified as a separate file. Licence and source code.
